Full Time or Part Time Position
Long Island Advocacy (LIAC) is an established nonprofit organization that provides education advocacy and legal support to students attending school on Long Island. Our staff works together to advocate for the rights of all students regardless of disability, gender, legal status or participation in the juvenile justice system.
LIAC is seeking a staff attorney that will be part of a team supporting youth in Nassau County dealing with challenging behaviors and Code of Conduct violations at school. This staff attorney will also provide legal and/or technical assistance to families who meet criteria of the Long Island Advocacy Center.
Responsibilities:
- Provide legal guidance to education advocates;
- Participate and assist in intakes over the phone and in person;
- Represent minors at Hearings such as Superintendent Hearings and/or Impartial Hearings
- Collaborate with staff in the analysis and creation of legal strategies;
- Contribute to the creation of policies and strategies for Long Island Advocacy Center;
- Provide detailed reporting statistics on all cases and programs;
- Prepare trainings and materials to present to families and staff working with LIAC programs.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- JD degree and admission to New York State Bar required;
- Three (3) or more years experience (preferred);
- Spanish language skills (preferred);
- Excellent written, analytical, oral, organizational and time management skills;
- Experience working with diverse communities (preferred);
- Experience working with children (preferred);
- Knowledge of Education Law including IDEA (preferred);
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team;
- Must be ready to grow and learn with Long Island Advocacy Center work.
Salary: $65,000-$70,000 commensurate with experience.
